“Cash?” I said, and he settled
down and turned back to me. I was
trembling, but he nuzzled me like
nothing had ever happened, so I
petted him. I pulled another apple
from my pocket and gave it to him,
then continued to stroke his neck.
“I just think he doesn’t like you,”
I said.
“Thank you! Thank you, Mr.
Einstein, for that brilliant
observation!” the man shouted. “Did
you figure that all out by yourself, or
did it come to you from the fact that
he just tried to kill me?”
The third man, the one who drove
the car, joined the conversation for
