            Home.  The word echoed again in his head.  Where     was home?  What was home?  Could it be home when     every dream he had there was gone?  Much of what drew     his heart there was now the same thing that was tearing it     apart.            He thought of her words.  He had known Molly had     been sick, but now he realized that his mother thought he     knew more than that.            He hunted until he found Molly’s letter that had been     penned near the same time.  He read it.  She was trying to     hint she was married.  The sickness wasn’t the flu.  It was     more than that; that was obvious now.  She wasn’t coming     right out and saying she was morning sick, but she was     trying so hard to have him understand.  Why hadn’t she     just said it?            For a moment, bitterness and anger filled his heart.     How could they just let him go on believing?  How could     Molly do this to him?  Eli read more and more letters.  The     more he read, the more he realized it was his own fault.  He     was far away and the love he had for Molly and the dreams     they had shared were the strings that still tied him back to     what he had known.  He hadn’t wanted to quit believing.  It     was easier to go on, ignoring the obvious.  He was the one     that couldn’t give up his dream.            The tears started coming faster and faster.  His     emotions were a mixture of anger and sorrow.  He could     feel the turmoil in his heart.  The love he felt for Molly was     conflicting with the anger welling up from deep inside.     Anger and love can’t exist freely together, and his     emotions battled back and forth.            He was reeling from this inner turmoil when Jim                                       34
