How Farm Dogs Get Their Names l Have you ever wondered how a farm dog gets its name? Well, let me explain it to you. The other day I went to see a neighbor, Bart, who is a farmer. As we sat visiting in his yard, I looked over to see a beautiful golden retriever that I hadn’t ever seen there before. “New dog?” I asked. “Not too new,” he replied. “I’ve had him for about a year.” “You training him for hunting or anything useful?” I asked. “Heck, no. Not unless you count riding around in the back of the pickup as useful. He’s good at that. That and gettin’ underfoot all of the time.” “What’s his name?” I asked. “Rufus,” came Bart’s reply. “My wife named him.” I whistled and patted my leg. “Here, Rufus.” The dog only yawned and ignored me. 9
