Never Ask What Else Can Go Wrong l Sometimes I ask, “What else can go wrong?” My wife told me to never say that phrase. She says it is like a bad omen, and will just make something worse happen. But I have a tendency to say it when I feel I have reached rock bottom. That was what happened that evening. It all started out wrong, as I arrived home, late, from work. It was dress rehearsal night for the theatre production my daughter and I were in, and all the newspaper representatives were going to be there. I knew that if I hurried, we would barely have time to get there for a small amount of makeup before we were to go on. But my pickup wouldn’t start. By lifting the hood and working the wires on the battery, it wasn’t too long before I had us on our way. By then I knew we were going to be late, and to top it off, my hands were covered with oil. By the time we arrived, the play was already underway. My daughter and I had to rush to our first scenes with no makeup and no costumes. As soon as it was over, we rushed back to the makeup room to try to be transformed before our main scenes. I was still trying to 13
