“That’s all the money I had until
the end of the month,” Johnson
complained. “Now what will I do?”
“He said he’d pay it back,”
Stanton, another missionary, said.
“Yeah, right,” Johnson said.
“Like that’s really going to
happen.”
“How much was it?” I asked.
“Five dollars,” Johnson replied.
“Isn’t that what we’re doing out
here anyway?” I asked. “I mean, if
he needed it, wouldn’t you have
given it to him?”
“I suppose,” he replied. “But I
don’t like the idea of someone just
stealing it.”
