person that lived within a ten-mile radius of us

(all ten of them). On the other hand, when I

went to visit her family for the first time, she
hardly knew the name of a single person who

lived on her block.

I learned that quickly. When we arrived at
her parents’ house, the first thing we did was to

go inside so I could meet her family. Then I

went out to the car to unload our luggage. Not
far away I saw a neighbor who was watering his

lawn. I thought I would be friendly, so I went
over to say hello. I introduced myself, and told

him I was a friend of Donna’s family.

“Who?” he asked.
I pointed to Donna’s parents’ home. “Your

neighbors, the Walkers.”

“Oh, is that the name of the people who
live there?” he replied.

I thought he might be new in the
neighborhood, but I found out he had lived

there for 40 years. I continued trying to visit,

but he just looked at me strangely. Eventually,
he went inside and peered suspiciously at me

through the curtains.

So when Donna asked me where I wanted
