Seeing the fish, the boys were anxious to
try their own luck. In fact, they were in such a
hurry that they grabbed the pancakes off the
griddle while they were still gooey in the inside.
As quickly as they finished, they dashed off
with their poles, and the ice was soon dotted
with scouts dangling their fishing lines through
the holes Rod had drilled.
I wandered out to watch. The boys all sat
impatiently, receiving hardly a bite while Rod
pulled in fish after fish. Gordy asked him what
he was using for bait.
“Worms,” he replied.
“But I’ve been using worms all morning,”
Gordy complained, “and I haven’t had the
slightest nibble.
“That’s because your worms are mostly
